This example demonstrates the approach we took recently to deliver the results of field inspections of gas upgrade works for the North West Gas Alliance - which is an alliance between Balfour Beatty and National Grid.
This solution has been in use by North West Gas Alliance since June 2007. See case study for more information.

Step one - Capture the informationInformation is captured using a pen and paper. The pen records the movements over the paper and stores it in its memory. When the form has been completed the information is transmitted from the pen to a mobile phone, and from there onto a Web Service. The paper copy of the information is retained in the field, eliminating the need to return to base to deliver the paper. In this example the form typically takes 20 minutes to complete on site. As soon as the form is complete it is transmitted to the server in under 30 seconds. |

Step two - Review and update anywhere in the worldThe completed form can now be viewed online by anyone with the correct access to the secure server on which the information resides. This is done using standard Web browser technology so no special software is required to use the system. Diagrams and drawings are transferred seamlessly, and handwritten information can be character recognised and validated automatically against business rules built into the system.

Step three - Management analytics and reportsThe information contained in the form automatically analysed by software, and management information systems automatically updated in real time. The management information systems are accessed using Web browser technology so can be accessed by anyone with the appropriate permissions. Our management analytics and reporting tools allow a user to drill down from the top level overviews into detailed reports and finally into the actual forms completed. |
